Frequently Asked Questions

How do you work with couples?

1

With couples, I focus on the emotional bond between you and the patterns you get caught in together. Rather than deciding who is “right” or “wrong,” we look at the cycle you both get pulled into, such as behaviours of pursuing, withdrawing, shutting down, and criticising, as well as the feelings and fears underlying them. From an attachment-based, informed-psychodynamic perspective, we explore how past experiences and expectations may be replaying in your relationship now, and practise new, safer ways of reaching for each other and responding. The aim is to help you both feel more understood, more secure, and better able to navigate conflict together.

Will you give me advice? Or tell me what to do?

2

My role is not to give advice on how to live your life. Counselling draws on your inner resources to help you understand yourself more deeply so that your choices come from a clearer and more grounded place. At times, I may offer reflections and information. At times, I may offer reflections, information, or suggestions for things you might try between sessions, but these are always invitations, not instructions. We will work collaboratively, and I will respect your pace, your values, and your sense of what is right for you.

How long will therapy take?

3

There’s no one “time frame” that works for everyone. A short-term goal may help some people get through a stressful situation or decision. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Others choose longer or may need longer to address deeper patterns, trauma, or relationship problems. We will discuss objectives and continue to monitor progress.
